Pollensa

Pollensa in northern Mallorca is an incredibly popular area for second homes and many people who end up buying here have visited on holiday in the past. It lies at the end of the Tramuntana mountain chain, just 6 kilometres inland of the port of Pollensa. With the mountains as its backdrop, the municipality spreads out into flat countryside which is dotted with country villas, fincas and cottages, many of which are offered for seasonal rental by overseas companies.

The advantage Pollensa has over other locations (for example, Soller or Fornalutx in the north west of the island) is that it offers easier country pursuits - less demanding walking and cycling, as well as horse riding and golf which isn’t possible in the hillier regions. Furthermore, it caters for families with younger children because the bay is shallow and safe with sandy beaches, unlike other parts of the coast with prevailing north westerly winds and shingle coves. It also lies within two peninsulas, so there is always shelter from wind if you are interested in gentle water sports such as stand up paddle, canoeing or snorkelling. Conversely, if you are interested in demanding water activities such as windsurfing or kite surfing, this is the area for you. So there is something for all ages.

Pollensa town itself has a medieval core. Its central square is dominated by a 13th century church and its lanes are lined with 17th and 18th century terraced houses. Some are rendered but the majority are original stone buildings. North of the town is a famous set of 365 steps leading to a chapel, where there are splendid views over the rooftops. On Sundays there’s a street market which has evolved over the years to draw large crowds. It includes not only a huge choice of local fruit, vegetables and other produce but quality arts and crafts of every description.

There are plenty of fiestas and festivities throughout the year. In the summer, there’s a twice weekly night market in the nearby port which is open until midnight. A simulated battle between the Moors and the Christians takes place also in August. There are beer, wine and cuttlefish festivals and a weekend of sea plane demonstrations as the base for fire fighting planes is situated in the bay. There are annual sports events such as the marathon and iron man competitions.

The main areas of interest are the Vall d’en March, west of the town, a flat valley with a road leading through the mountains to Lluc monastery. North of the town lies the Ternelles valley and La Font. South of the town is the Colonya valley. The approach from all these directions is very attractive. East of the town several roads fan out across the plain of Almadrava towards the coast and Alcudia.
