Calvia

The municipality of Calvia is the richest municipality in Spain outside Madrid, because it encompasses a wide area of coast including a great number of hotels as well as the best marina on the island, Puerto Portals. Away from the coast, the inland terrain is peaceful and dotted with fincas and country houses whilst the town of Calvia itself is only a few minutes’ drive from many beaches.  It’s popular with permanent residents, especially those with children attending international schools which are predominantly west of Palma, such as Agora, Queen’s College, Bellver, Baleares International College and so on.

Calvia’s well developed infrastructure and proximity to Palma makes it an excellent choice for all year round living. The area remains vibrant in winter unlike other parts of the island which see an influx of visitors in the summer months only to die in winter.

There are plenty of sports facilities in the area, with indoor swimming pools, adventure parks, several golf courses and a number of stables for riding enthusiasts. There are year round sports events such as cycle races and marathons.

Calvia town fans out from its massive church built in 1248. Just off the square is a large, tiled plaque which shows Calvia’s history at a glance,   portraying Jaume I and his troops landing at Santa Ponsa. The square is the centre of activity for the town and one of its major festivals is a sheep and goat fair held in the spring.

A favoured part of Calvia is Son Font, a quiet, residential area which lies above the village of Calvia in the Tramuntana hills. From here, there are several roads which have properties featuring stunning views over the countryside to the sea.
